2023 Wells Fargo Championship odds, picks, predictions, field: Proven golf insider fading Rory McIlroy

Justin Thomas returns to the site of his first major championship and will be part of a loaded PGA Tour field at the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow beginning on Thursday. Thomas won the 2017 PGA Championship on the course in Charlotte, N.C. Yet he is far from the only golfer in the Wells Fargo field with an excellent track record on the long and challenging course. Max Homa is the defending champion, and while the event was played at TPC Potomac last year, he also won the 2019 Wells Fargo in Charlotte. Rory McIlroy has won three times, including the most recent edition there in 2021. And many of the stars from last year’s Presidents Cup-winning American team are scheduled to compete. Those players include Tony Finau, who won last week’s Mexico Open, as well as Homa, Thomas, Jordan Spieth and Patrick Cantlay.

McIlroy is the 15-2 favorite in Caesars Sportsbook’s latest 2023 Wells Fargo Championship odds. The four other golfers shorter than 20-1 were part of that USA Presidents Cup team — Cantlay (14-1), Xander Schauffele (16-1), Finau (17-1) and Spieth (19-1). There are nine players from that team in the Wells Fargo Championship 2023 field, and none have odds longer than 31-1. Thomas is priced at 21-1 and Homa is at 24-1. Before making any 2023 Wells Fargo Championship picks, be sure you check out the PGA Tour predictions and best bets from SportsLine golf insider Sia Nejad.

Nejad specializes in betting and DFS in golf, among other sports. He’s had incredible success in the outright and first-round leader markets and betting head-to-head matchups. In 2022, he hit six first-round leaders in a 12-week span while peppering in tournament outrights throughout the year. In 2023, SportsLine debuted “The Early Wedge,” and in the first three months of the show, he hit two FRLs and three outright winners.

Nejad also had a winning head-to-head record in eight of 10 weeks (including full tournament sweeps on head-to-head plays). He was up more than 70 units over that three-month span. Anyone following him saw some huge returns.

Now, Nejad has studied the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship field and has locked in his best bets, top sleepers and favorites to avoid. You can head to SportsLine now to see all of Nejad’s PGA picks and analysis.

Top 2023 Wells Fargo Championship expert picks

One surprise: Nejad is fading McIlroy this week, mostly because he says “the betting number is prohibitive.” But the Northern Irishman also has missed the cut in his past two stroke-play events. He hasn’t played since going home early from the Masters, and Nejad expects that to help. McIlroy finished third at Match Play in between the missed cuts and has finished in the top 10 nine times in 11 outings at Quail Hollow. But the tour’s longest hitter is 174th in driving accuracy, 156th in greens in regulation and 174th in strokes gained putting.

On the other hand, Viktor Hovland (21-1) has been in strong form, and Nejad says he is “on the precipice of winning a big event.” The Norwegian has five top-10 finishes this season and repeated as champion at the unofficial Hero World Challenge in December. He tied for third at the Players and seventh at the Masters but finished T-59 after a third-round 78 at the RBC Heritage. He should bounce back, as the 25-year-old ranks fourth in total driving and 11th in scoring average. He already has seven worldwide victories in his budding professional career. See who he is backing at SportsLine.

How to make 2023 Wells Fargo Championship golf picks

Nejad has locked in his best bets for the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship and is picking his longshots, including one who comes in at around 50-1 odds. This golfer has the elite iron play that will be needed to succeed at Quail Hollow and is “not afraid to rise up on the leaderboard on Sundays.” See who it is at SportsLine.

So which players should you target or avoid for the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship? And which golfer could bring a huge payday of around 50-1?
