Boris Johnson is to hail a Brexit trade deal that will allow him to boast that he has fulfilled his election pledge to “get Brexit done”.
Johnson is due to hold a Downing Street press conference this afternoon after negotiators signed off the last tortuous detail of massive trade deal.
A Brussels press conference with European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen and chief negotiator Michel Barnier got underway first in Brussels.
The deal will allow tariff free and quota free trade with the EU and no limits on the goods that can be sold into the EU.
Von Der Layen said: “We have finally found and agreement, but we have good deal to show for it. It is fair, balanced deal and the right and responsible thing to do for both sides.”
A Downing Street source insisted that “everything that the British public was promised during the 2016 referendum and in the general election last year is delivered by this deal”.
They added: “We have taken back control of our money, borders, laws, trade and our fishing waters.
“The deal is fantastic news for families and businesses in every part of the UK. We have signed the first free trade agreement based on zero tariffs and zero quotas that has ever been achieved with the EU
“The deal is the biggest bilateral trade deal signed by either side, covering trade worth £668bn in 2019.”
But concessions on fishing, a reported 25 per cent reduction in the value of EU quota in UK waters over five years before the UK takes control of all stocks, could leave industry bosses in Scotland still accusing the government of a sell-out.
